What is Phantom Power and how do I reduce it?
Did you know that it is possible to waste energy in the background through phantom power?
What is phantom power?
Phantom power is the energy that is wasted around your home when devices are plugged in and using power, but you are not actively using them. Take a look around your home and take note of the items that are plugged in: Laptops, gaming consoles, TVs, kitchen appliances, alarm clocks, hair appliances, etc. The average home has dozens of items plugged in at any given time, and the majority of the electricity these devices consume is when they aren’t even on! Did you know that all the phantom power from your home can add up to approximately 10 per cent of your home’s energy costs?
You can track your power to see how much “phantom” power or electricity you are using at night and when you are not home. Our customer portal, MyAccount allows you to see your Smart Meter data and daily and hourly consumption. Notice how much energy you use while you are sleeping and check around the house for appliances or consoles that are plugged in over night!
